I can barely believe it. In just short of 12 hours, my "baby" will be entering Kindegarten. I am filled with joy, excitement, and a sprinkling of sadness and nervousness. Nervous because her world is opening up to more strangers and we are both going to have to ascertain which will become friends and which should not. Sad at the realization that my baby is no longer a baby. Sometimes, in short, fleeting moments, I wish I could stop time and she could stay my baby. But those moments make me cherish our photos and this job that much more. The photos capture that moment forever. And in that way, I like to think I do get to have my cake and eat it, too.

Not in the way that you might be thinking.

By far, my favorite type of photo session to do is newborns. I just love seeing cute little squishy babies in all their newtotheworldness. There is nothing like it. You're getting fresh human beings before being influenced by anything or anyone. They're adapting to life outside mama's belly and yawning like they've been working in the farm from sun up to sun down. You know that big yawn I'm talking about. I love capturing these precious moments in their lives because they don't stay this tiny, this wrinkly, this pliable for very long at all. You can already see them losing a bit of those things at just two weeks old! That is why I think it's so important to have photos to document newborns in the first couple of days. Heck...if I could be there with you in the hospital, I would! (I really would; birth photography is something I'd like to get into someday, but I'll save that for a later post)

Ok now, couple my love of shooting newborns with my itch to pick up my camera and shoot someone other than my own crazy kid (not that I can tire of photographing her!) and you've got me going back on my word. I know I said I wasn't taking on new clients until September...but I'm making an exception for the babes.

What's on your walls | orange county family photographer

Following up from last post, we’ve officially gone from moving to moved. Settled, however, is clearly going to take some time.

There are still boxes unpacked, shred bags un-shredded (my God the volume of documents we need to shred!), and items I only realize I need to find at the inopportune time of when I actually need them. *shrug* Still…the one thing that bothers me most is the bare walls. I have some photos and trinkets up on the mantle already; and I have my one piece of authentic Palauan wood art that I definitely will hang but I’m just waiting to hear which wall will beg me to hang this piece of art on it. Yes walls can talk! But the rest of the walls in this place are milky white aka blah. I’ve long been a fan of art and even have some favorite artists but that’s just for the sheer enjoyment of viewing those pieces, whether in a museum, book, magazine, online, etc. It is an entirely different thing to choose art for your home. There are lots of paintings and pieces I’ve seen online that I like, but I mostly look at them and think, “do I love it?” and “will I love it in a year? Five years? Ten?”

So that in mind my friends…who’s art do you love and have let find a place in your house? Where do you shop for the pieces that become a part of your everyday landscape?

Here are some pieces that have caught my eye; some I’m considering purchasing, others I’m just admiring for the sake of admiration.

I SOOOO want all three of these Polaroid pieces framed and on a wall in my place. I will DEFINITELY be ordering them. They are courtesy of the Yellow Owl Workshop via Velocity Art and Design’s site.

I got turned on to Blanca Gomez by the lovely ms Tara Whitney. She blogged about some reno she did to a small space in her home and found these adorable prints by Blanca. That same day, my friend Erin, who has an amazing blog, talked about some spur-of-the-moment reno work in her own home (turned out beautifully), which included art from a store that carried Blanca's work. How sweet is this?

I absolutely WILL own an Audrey Kawasaki someday. WILL!

And I’ve kind of taken to Kristin Kemper’s pieces. There’s a bit of a Disney feel to her work. I’m thinking I may be able to find some stuff I can use in the daughter’s room. Wdyt?

And I am inspired by these pieces by Matthew Heller. It’s a watercolor collaboration between him and his son. I’m thinking of attempting my own collaboration with the girl to really personalize the space. I also dig his Homage to Music (literally the words of a song on the wall). Would love to do that in a room someday…

Movin' on up | orange county family photographer

Yes...you read that right.

The big news is that Sweetface Photography is moving! Starting in July, I'm going to be an Orange Countyer! Orange Countian? Orange Countyite? OCR (Orange County resident)…yeah...we’ll just go with that. ha!

First I want to thank all of my clients over the past three years. It has been quite an amazing run here in San Diego (my home for the last 20 years - literally). When I first started Sweetface, I had it in mind that in order for me to be successful, I would need a ton of clients booking me. But very shortly I learned that while that may be an appropriate goal for some, for me, my success meant repeat customers. Because it meant that [1] they appreciated my art so much that they felt secure in trusting me to capture some lasting memories for their families. And an equally important [2] these wonderful people not only appreciated me as an artist, but connected with me on another level. That has become my barometer for success – repeat clientele – and I’ve been very blessed in that the majority of my business has been such. So on that end, I admit I am quite disheartened leaving behind such amazing people.

However, I am going to go into this move with an optimistic heart and mind. I’m telling myself that I can achieve the same level of success and even grow, as Sweetface Photography plants its feet on Orange County’s soil. I will be taking the summer off so that I can settle in, get me and my family acclimated to the lay of the new land, prepare my little one for KINDERGARTEN (wow!), and get the business changes in order. While I will not be doing any physical shooting this summer, I WILL be accepting clients for the holiday season (sessions taking place September through November). So my friends, if you have any friends and family members in the Orange County area (or close by) who you happen to know are looking for a family photographer who wants to grow with their growing families, please let them know I’m headed their way and to shoot me an email. Or heck…even if you’re in San Diego, we can definitely work something out as far as travel for your session. I already have one San Diego family (one of those amazing repeat clients/friends I was talking about earlier) booked for their holiday session in San Juan Capistrano! So things can definitely be worked out folks. Talk about a great way to veer away from the “typical” san diego shoot. ;)

*sigh* I’m long-winded, I know. I promise, I’m shutting up soon.

Again, I just want to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and for many of you, your friendship. There seriously are not enough words to express how much you mean to me. It’s been one amazing ride.

A walk for the mind and spirit, 2011

Family and friends,

I am writing you today to tell you about an upcoming event that I am participating in that is both very important and very exciting to me. It is NAMIWalks for the Mind of America, NAMI’s signature 5k event that is being held in San Diego, CA at Balboa Park next weekend, on April 16, 2011.

This will be my second year participating in this event and I'm very much looking forward to it. The spirit of last year's walk was one of hope and positivity. Again this year, I will be running with my head up; proud to know that every step helps to further research for treatment for those suffering any one or combination of the many forms of mental illness. More specifically and personally, I'll be walking with the hope that it helps get us closer to finding the cause and hopefully one day a cure for dementia and Alzheimer's - an illness that has affected my family very closely, through my Grandma Anne and her sister, Laura. We are still praying for these beautiful women to fight their way back to us, but in the meantime, we participate in events like this one to help fund the research that will facilitate that fight.

I love that while this is what the holiday season looks like for some...

...ours looks like this, complete with the likes of a gorgeous family like you're about to see. And like I love warm holidays in San Diego, I love this family. I've been lucky getting to photograph Chelsea, Michael, Ella and Quintin for the past year and a half (Quintin was just six months old the first time I shot them and he recently turned two!); luckier still just getting to know them.

Once again, the family is planning on using these photos for their holiday cards, so we'll post just a few so we don't ruin the surprise for their friends and family.

How Christian got his groove back | san diego family photographer

First let me just say that this post comes oozing with optimism (those who know me best should start picking their jaws up off the floor now). Can it be that months of computer/website/whatever else could go wrong are finally on the mend? I'm holding out hope that things are finally looking up. Email is still a little wonky, but I think we've finally got the new website just about ready to launch. The blog has been slow...ok, dead...for the last few months due mostly in part to said computer issues, but also to some personal stuff that's well...personal. That said, I've got my optimism on and what better family to start with then this one...

...you may recognize them. I've photographed them twice before and both me and my camera love them. When you last saw Christian, he was brand spankin' new to this world and his parents, Sophia and Steve were adjusting to life without sleep. ;) Well, Mr. Christian is now a year old and even more handsome than the last time we saw him. On top of that...this boy loves to dance. He cannot help it...if he hears a tune, his body has to dance. So like most his age, he was a little hesitant with me sticking my big ol' camera in his face, but with a little help from dad's singing the theme song from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Christian got his groove and worked the dooty out of their session. ;)

Note: It's holiday season again...which means limited sneak peeks. Gotta save the surprise for everyone's holiday cards. but no worries, Christian was so "on", we've got plenty of just his cuteness to hold everyone over.

In a few short weeks, Annie and Richard will be celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. To celebrate, Annie emailed me and said she wanted to get back into her wedding gown and shoot at the very spot where she said yes to Richard all those years ago (how romantic is that?!). I was so looking forward to this shoot because I've always wanted to do my own "trash the dress" session, so I got to live vicariously through Annie. Plus, she just seemed like so much fun to hang out with it - and she (and all of her boys) proved me right.

Have to start with the shoes. I just love a pretty pair of shoes!

Trisha |bonita maternity photographer

Sometimes I wonder if I should really call this a job. Because, aren't you supposed to hate going to work? Picking up my camera to capture special moments in time for people is, I imagine, much like the moment when a kid first hears the chiming of the ice cream truck. A moment of joy and anticipation. That joy is magnified when my clients are sweet, charming, funny, and gorgeous. Trisha is all of those and thensome - even despite nearing the end of her pregnancy (and you other moms know exactly how hard that time can be). I had such a great time photographing, and even better time just getting to know her and her family.

First I'm going to start with this. Because after my love of my family, photography, and food...there's my love of shoes. I couldn't resist a shoe shot when Trisha broke out these little lovelies...

Did I mention she was g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s?

Jessica paid for her family's session by check. Right before I deposited that check I reviewed it for accuracy, and when I looked down at the "for" line, Jessie had written in "the sake of art" and it made me smile and literally laugh out loud, and I knew in that moment I had this session's blog title.

Jessie and her family welcomed me into their beautiful home for their photo session yesterday morning. I had so much fun shooting them all - there was so much love, laughter, and even a couple of bottles of wine. I swear I have the best clients pretty much ever.

What's the saying ol' Forest Gump made famous? Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Well, the same can be said for photographing young children - especially when they range in age from 10 months to 5 years old. And especially when the 5 and 3 year olds are boys. But these kids were such a breeze to work with, and the entire family is beautiful, sweet, and the camera loved each and ever one of them. Take a look for yourselves...

Just Shoot Me | san diego urban photographer

Apparently, three photographers climbing shrub boxes, posing in front of buildings and laying down in the street to take photos of each other is quite the sight to see. Last weekend I met up with two of my photographer friends, Sophie and Jen, for a bit of a head shot exchange and a lot of photography fun. In the process, we attracted our fair share of onlookers and even one who decided to jump in the shot. It was so much fun talking shop with some fellow photogs and even being on the other side of the camera. Here are a couple of shots of my photografriends ;)

Riva contacted me a few weeks ago wanting to get some portraits of her family of five, but was a little hesitant. I understand - it's a little nerve-wracking being in front of the camera. I'm so glad she decided to just go for it because [1] children grow up so fast and [2] I got to meet this beautiful, sweet, fun family! Twins Jeffrey and Brandon delivered exactly what I expected from twin three-year olds: LOTS of energy and play. Baby Lauren is just the cutest, sweetest little girl; I just love her smooshy cheeks! Riva and Scott, you have such a beautiful family - it was such a great pleasure photographing you all. Hope you enjoy your sneak peeks!

Hello friends!

The first contest of 2010 is here and there's a little bit of a twist on it this time around. If you haven't experienced the awesomeness of the Awkward Family Photos website yet, please take a moment to peruse it first and try not to soil yourself during your fits of laughter or flashbacks of your own family's awkward photographic moments) to witness the inspiration for this month's contest. Go ahead and check it out...I'll wait. :)

Ok, so many of you have seen the most standard of contest solicited by photographers, myself included. The basic premise - submit a photo of yourself, your family, or your child(ren) and let the voting begin. The premise here is still just that, only this time I want you folks mustering up the courage to publicly display your own awkward family portraits, submitting those photos, and encouraging your friends and family to vote yours the most awkward! Fun, right? Well...I can say that because I'm not putting my family's awkward photos on display. Erm...because we don't have any...yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol

Entering is very simple. Just send me an email with your family's most awkward photo and a quick description about the photo (a couple of sentences will do just fine).

That's it - it's that easy! I will be accepting entries from May 1 until May 10. The top three finalists will be featured on my blog on May 11, and voting will last through May 15. Voting instructions will be posted that day as well. The winning photo will be announced May 17.

Now, what's the big prize up for grabs? The winner will receive a FREE session and a FREE 11x14 print (that's a $180 value)!

Official rules:

1. Winner must reside in or be willing to travel to San Diego, CA for the session.
2. Only one entry per person/family.

Rachel + Chad + Perfect Timing | Pacific Beach maternity photographer

This shoot was just meant to happen. Rain has been forecast for the entire weekend, but thankfully Rachel and Chad didn't let that scare them away from their maternity session this morning. When I left my house this morning, the ground was still wet but the sky looked beautiful - there was a slight sprinkle during the drive up, but I still had hope for a great shoot. Sun was shining when I arrived at their home, so we got started, first in their front yard and then we casually strolled around their neighborhood, letting the urbanscape present some location gems. And as we were finishing the shoot and walking up to their front door, the rain started. This shoot was just meant to happen. :)

Giving is Awesome - the winners | Encinitas family photographer

As some of you may remember, this past December I announced my participation in the Giving is Awesome (GIA) program - a program that affords custom photography for some very special people in our community (click here for more info). When I contacted Laural with the news of her winning, she was just weeks (if that) pregnant with their second child and knew that she would want to save her GIA session for his arrival. Well, yesterday morning I had the honor of meeting and photographing this beautiful, new family of four. I had a great time shooting with them yesterday - the weather was so perfectly gorgeous and this family just shined with love. Take a look...

Rain, rain go away| Mission Bay family photographer

I've been watching the weather for the entirety of this last week because the threat of rain was imminent for today's session. In fact, as late (or as early, depending on your POV) as 1:00am this morning, the weather channel was still forecasting morning showers. Melissa, my client, and I decided that we'd wait until an hour prior to the session to call it - if it's raining at that time, we'll postpone; if not, we'll meet up and see what happens. Thankfully, when I peered out of my window this morning, the clouds were bright and the sun was shining! Melissa and Brian are parents to Nathan and Kira. In honor of Kira's arrival and Nathan turning three soon, we made our way out to mission bay to capture some images of this beautiful family!

Today I met one of the most fun, charming, and beautiful families in all of San Diego. Seriously. I'll admit being a shade nervous anticipating my largest group yet - eight adults and four kiddos under three - but I had *such* a great time photographing all of them.

As you can imagine, shooting a large group means LOTS of pictures, so this post is going to be word light and photo HEAVY (which is how most would prefer it anyway. lol)! Let's get to the sneak peeks...

I love photos. I love beautiful families who love photos. I also especially love that the storm that has been accosting our usually sunny city for the duration of this last week, broke just in time to let this session happen. The weather today, while a tad colder than most of us Sun Diego folks are used to, was capital G-orgeous. Seriously - as I was making my way to this shoot, I had the Katrina & The Waves song blasting from Nigella's speakers (Nigella is the new car's name; more on her in another post). Anyhow, I suppose the fab weather was fitting since the family I had the pleasure of snapping today is capital G-orgeous, too! Don't believe me? Take a sneak peek!

Before I announce the winner of the Giving is Awesome giveaway, I just want to take a moment to thank all of you for your nominations. This giveaway turned out to be so much more than just being able to do something nice for a deserving soul. Reading all the entries really just reminded me about the basic good we all have within us - and for that I am the most grateful. It was such a difficult choice to make, as there were so many deserving families highlighted and all the nominees were very deserving of this giveaway. But alas - I can only choose one.

THE SOUR
*dog kicking neighbor. Had to report a neighbor to the authorities because we witnessed him kick his dog...hard. Poor puppy (an adorable seven month old grey pitbull) squeeled in pain and it broke my heart. Don't know if anything was done by the auths but we shall see. Will keep you all posted.

*a jammed finger (so if there are any typos…blame the finger).

I don't know how it happened but for whatever reason, my left index finger is in pain. I'm walking around with a stupid splint on it and can't even offer up a decent excuse as to why I have it. Maybe I should make something up - like a freak mini-horse racing accident? Hmm...sounds better than, "I honestly don't know", right? Right?

*buyer’s remorse before actually buying. I saw these pretty neat pre-lit reindeer decorations for half off last week. I was super hesitant and talked myself iinto buyer’s remorse without even putting it into my basket. Gave myself all kinds of good reasons not to buy it. Alas, this is usually a sign that I really want something and of course, I can’t seem to learn myself. Anywho, OF COURSE when I go back into the store yesterday to finally pick one up – they’re sold out. Criminy!

THE SWEET

*The husband. My sweet man knows that I have always wanted a surprise birthday party. Of course...he should since I tell him every year. But alas he finally heard my cry and said surprise party ensued this past Sunday! Now for those of you who know me, you're probably scratching your head and thinking, "but your birthday's not until next month". Ah, see, now therein lay the real surprise. My hubbabubba threw me a surprise birthday party on HIS birthday. Now ain't that a suprise worth loving?

*Facebook fans! They're trickling in slowly, but at least they're increasing. I love logging in and seeing a new FB fan or two. It's like a sweet little present and affirmation that somebody digs me. ;) lol Have you fanned Sweetface Photography on FB yet? If not...it's never too late! Click here to join the party!

*Mixed Chicks hair products.
Particularly their conditioner. Have started using these products on the kid's hair and am loving it. The conditioner has really helped with keeping her hair soft and less tangled; the Hair Silk is great for keeping the frizzies at bay and adding some more shine. Will definitely keep buying from them!

*Starbucks Caramel Brulee Latte.
Holy canoli! I'm not really a big Starbucks person, but I go during the holidays for their Peppermint Mocha. Well, this past weekend on my way to a photo session, I stopped in to get the P'mint mocha again but my eyes (and tastebuds) were quickly sidetracked by the little chalkboard drawing of a little latte called Caramel Brulee. My lips ordered and then they fell in love. This latte is pretty much love in a grande cup. Highly recommend you try it folks!

You met Leah and Mike, and big sister Addison, a couple of months ago for their maternity session. Now they're a new family of four, having just welcomed handsome little Preston into the world last week. Such a sweet little guy; Preston just went with the flow of things and never fussed no matter how many times we repositioned him or changed his clothes. Once again I found myself wanting to put down the camera and just melt in and enjoy his delightful newborn-ness. Thankfully I didn't because [1] that would probably have freaked his parents out (lol) and [2] you all wouldn't get to see just how beautiful he is...

I was very excited when Alice told me she wanted to do her family session in La Jolla cove. I'm one of the few San Diegans, I'm sure, who had never been there. Not that I didn't want to - just never found enough motivation to go. But thankfully she picked this spot because it was just beautiful - almost as beautiful as their growing family. Try to keep an eye out for Alice's little bump - she's just over halfway to welcoming their second cutiepie.

Laihla's mom, Lisa, contacted me because, like most moms, she wanted to get some good photos of her two-year old daughter. What she didn't tell me beforehand is that little miss Laihla was such a great entertainer! :) She was just singing her little heart out while I snapped away. On top of that, she is just as cute as is humanly possible, so yeah...me thinks this is a star in the making guys.

Of course we had to get some shots with the entire, beautiful family, too. And I know what you're thinking - I couldn't believe she was mom to a 17-year old either. Work it out Lisa!

Party of 5 and our 100th post | La Jolla Family Photographer

It's kind of nice to have my 100th blog post feature a family I've watched grow - from watching Allison plan hers and Marc's wedding, to their pregnancy, to the birth of the twins, and up until now. Their family has graced my blog twice before - once for Allison's maternity session, and again for the twins' newborn session. This time the family wanted to get together for some holiday portraits. So I met up with Allison, Marc, Brendan, Easton and Aven at their BEAUTIFUL home in La Jolla and managed to capture some great shots of this BEAUTIFUL family. The twins have grown so much since the last I saw them, and were just adorable and sweet; Brendan the handsome guy, was also sweet and I loved that he was so helpful and contributed lots of ideas for spots to shoot in. I also want to send a special thank you to Allison's parents! They were my unofficial assistants, ~~jumping around like wonderfully crazy monkeys~~ helping me to keep the twins' attention. I tell you there's nothing like grandparents - they are the best!

Since these images are going to be used for their holiday cards, I don't want to post too many and spoil the surprise for their family and friends. Without further ado - here are the sneak peeks!

I so enjoy photographing this family. Not just because Chelsea, Michael, Ella and Quintin are just about the cutest things ever, but because they are so sweet, easy-going, loving, and just plain fun. Not to mention, they stuck with me even after they came *this* close to getting attacked by a rogue squirrel (you HAD to be there! lol). I would have run for the hills, but thankfully, they hung in there and let me capture some more of their awesomeness. Since they're planning on using images from this session for their holiday cards, I'm only going to share a select few.

Oh and no worries...no humans or squirrels were harmed during the photographing of this family. :)

Three men and a little lady...

Yesterday evening I met with Allison and James down at Seaport Village, which happens to be the place where James proposed. *Insert aww's here* When we were deciding on the location for their shoot, Allison told me that she preferred being near the water and, as an example, mentioned Seaport Village and that it's where they had gotten engaged. I thought there was something really special about the idea of revisiting their engagement spot with their growing family - sort of a "full circle" kind of thing. They've come a long way since that fateful day and have since married and had two ADORABLE little boys - Luke and Reid - and I'm so glad they let me capture a little moment of their lives.

Oh...and once again people, I just HAVE to say it. I get to photograph the most beautiful families in San Diego. No really - just look for yourself...

I love this next one - I think they look like they're in a catalogue. By the way, I have to say that I love their wardrobe choices. See how they're coordinated without being entirely uniformed? Modern without being too trendy?

Scheduling and the Sweet & Sour...

Late breaking news: One of my clients had to cancel her holiday session, which was scheduled for this coming Sunday, November 1. If you or anyone you know is interested in taking their spot, email me ASAP to secure your session.

That said, aside from the now available November 1 spot, I am booked through the rest of the year and have started accepting clients into January 2010, with inquiries into February. So if you're looking for some portraits, whether for yourself or for your family, shoot me an email so we can get you booked ASAP.

Along the same vein, there will be an increase in prices effective January 1, 2010. If you book your 2010 session prior to that date, the 2009 session fee will be honored. So whether you book a session for January 1, 2010 or December 31, 2010, as long as you book/confirm by December 31, 2009, your session fee will be priced at the current 2009 rate.

So now that the business talk is out of the way, I also wanted to test out a new blog segment I'm considering, which is just a way to share some things that I've really been enjoying and not with all of my readers/friends. So without further ado, here's the first edition of the Sweet/Sour list.

SOUR

^_^ Identity thieves. So, while my identity hasn't been stolen or greatly compromised, someone recently managed to get a hold of my debit card info and made some purchases...in Pasadena! Weird, annoying and frustrating. Unfortunately, it has also happened to three other people I know since then. So it's important to stay on top of your bills, statements, et al people.

^_^ Chase. Related to the identity thief incident, my bank is going on the sour list. I found out about the situation because they left me a message about it on my answering machine. When I called back, the man I spoke with said he would close the account and I could get a new card at the bank. When I went to the back and told the teller this, he said no problem and indicated that I would have my new card within a week. Well, a week passed and nothing. I called Chase and the woman said it takes 10 business days. On the 11th business day I went into the bank to pull out money to get me through the next week; I also asked if they could track my card order. The teller says to me, "I'm sorry - there's no record of a replacement card being ordered." WHAT?! So yeah, Chase is on my poop list right now. Considering switching so if you have any recommendations or glowing reports about your bank, please comment below.

SWEET

=) The shrimp tempura sushi roll at Bento & Noodle. I'm in love with it and there's not really much else I can say about that. I imagine there will be lots of food items on the sweet lists to come. If you don't know, I am a total foodie.

=) Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook. Ugh. I hate admitting that one, but it's true. I spend way too much time playing this little diddy. And I even dowloaded the app on my BlackBerry. Someone, anyone...help me.

I'm dealing with some computer issues which I hope to have resolved this week, so this post is going to be relatively short. I'm calling it a teaser because, well, you all know how picture crazy I get and like to share a ton during sneak peeks. But alas...the computer issues aforementioned are limiting me. I've already typed this a couple of times and had to start anew after being booted mid-post.

Anyhow, I'd like you to meet the uber-adorable Hudson and his beautiful parents. I'm more than honored that they drove all the way down from LA to let me hang out with and photograph them and their handsome little guy.

I'm fighting the onset of a what feels like another cold, so I'm going to keep my yammering to a minimum on this one. What I definitely want to say about this family is that

[1] umm...could they BE any more gorgeous? Seriously, the lot of them.
[2] they are as sweet as they are gorgeous. I had such a great time just hanging out with them. And lastly,
[3] Grandma didn't make it into the blog today, but I wish I could bring her to all my sessions! There should be an award for unofficial assistant of the year...because she would win! An award and cookies. :)

Today is a very special day. Today, the love of my life turns three years old. It still takes me a minute to wrap my brain around the idea that I'm mommy to a three year old. More than that is that I'm mommy to an amazing little girl! She is smart, beautiful, thoughtful, caring, energetic, ambitious, adventurous, sweet, and absofrickinlutely hilarious! She loves to run, jump, and climb on any and everything; she makes up her own songs; she does Conan O'Brien impressions; she loves to dance (especially when SYTYCD is on); she loves when we play No Doubt, Black Eye Peas (clean, of course), Kings of Leon, and Jason Mraz; she "reads" books to us, but that usually means making up her own version of the story, making it so much funnier; she likes to hide and try to scare you when you come around the corner; she loves The Fresh Beat Band (hey...her taste can't be perfect at 3. lol); she will comfort you when you're sad; she loves the guess what/chicken butt joke and cracks up every time; she'll randomly come up to me, grab my face to make me look at her, and say, "mama...I love you" and proceed to give me the biggest kiss and hug.

*sigh* I really love being this little girl's mom.

Prima ballerina...

Yesterday we took our daughter to her very first ballet class. She has been excited beyond measure about this class since I registered her for it over a month ago. She has even been known to break into dance in the middle of a Red Lobster, telling everyone she was doing her ballet - true story. So the day finally comes, we get to the class, and what does she do? She attempts to take over instructing it! LOL For anyone who knows me, especially the child version of myself, you know that this just more proof that Beans is totally my kid! All the other little girls in class are pointing their toes on cue, eyes filled with awe and fixated on the instructor. My kid...no, my kid is the only kid escaping the mirror and bar and doing HER ballet. I have to commend the instructor - she has FAR more patience than I do and every time (there were many) Beans strayed, she gently got her back in line and focusing...at least for a good minute or two. Honestly, for a few moments I was a little embarrassed, thinking that the instructor and/or the other parents may think my kid doesn't know how to listen. But when I focused on the pure delight that was exuding from the HUGE smile on my little girl's face; when I thought about the fact that she is, even at two (almost three) years old her own person and completely comfortable in her skin; that embarrassment quickly disappeared and my smile and my heart were as big as my daughter's smile. Yet another joyful moment being this little girl's mother. There is more to come on the topic of joy as we celebrate her third year of life this Friday. You all met Sophia and Steve a couple of months ago when I did their maternity session. Well, two weeks ago they welcomed little Christian into the world and let me tell you he is just the most adorable little boy with killer eyes! Christian was such an easy model, too. Such a sweet, calm little guy who was super patient with me and my big camera in his face. The hardest part about photographing him was resisting the urge to put my camera down and just sit there and "ooh" and "ahh" over him! :)

I say it time and time again, but it just happens to be a very true story: I get to shoot the cutest kids ever! Little miss Samantha just turned a year old and she is just a little doll. From her sweet grin to her adorable little just-learning-to-walk waddle, she is a little ball of perfection. Which should be a surprise to no one considering what a beautiful couple of parents she has! ;) Just scroll down and take a look...you'll see what I'm talking about!

A couple of weeks ago, we took our daughter to the Children's Museum and I meant to blog about it, but got too busy between photo shoots, work, and birthday parties. Anyhow, Beans had a great time! It's a great place for children (and adults) to experience cool art exhibits, hands-on arts and crafts projects, and really just play. If you get a chance, make your way down there and I promise you won't be disappointed. You really can make a day of it, too, because they have a cool little organic cafe! Here are just a couple of pictures from Beans' trip...

Our little star is turning one...

This weekend my niece turns one year old. She is the squishiest, softest, sweetest, most adorable thing...pretty much ever. This past Saturday, we all gathered to celebrate the first year of her life and children and adults alike had a great time. The party was held at this awesome little place called My Gym in Eastlake; it's basically a gym for children, with lots of cool toys and activities (ie trampolines, a ball pit, rock-climbing wall, games, gymnastics, and more)! I heard a few adults wishing out loud that they had a gym like that for adults! lol

Anyway, I'm so excited to watch my niece grow. She has already changed so much and I can't wait to see what the next year has in store for her! She is just a little ball of light - making her name so very fitting.

Ok, so let's get to the fun! I, of course, took a ton of pictures but I'll just share ahem...a few here.

Two cakes - one strawberry lemon made my brother (which was very yum). And the other, passion fruit mousse, courtesy of a family favorite, Hans & Harry's. We use them a bunch - even used them for our wedding! This is the sun from Ni Hao Kai-lan (party's theme)...

Thomas and Cynthia, congrats on surviving the first year! I know it is a bittersweet time as your baby grows into toddlerhood, but I promise there is so much more fun around the corner (especially now that she is mobile!). I love all three of you so much!

Today I had the great privilege of photographing another newborn. We weren't expecting little Devon until next month, but he decided to make his debut into the world last weekend. I'm choosing to believe he was just THAT excited to meet me ;) Such a precious little guy he is; slept most of the time, but even awake he just sat ever-so-sweetly and let me snap away. Along for the ride were his parents, and big sister, Siena (who is equally adorable, might I add)! Like most toddlers, she was none too excited about having her photograph taken, but I still managed to trick her into a couple of great shots. All in all it was a great photo shoot - but then, how could you go wrong with as beautiful a family as this?

Ok, I have had an abnormally busy weekend and sadly must admit that my brain is somewhere between sauteed and fried. So that said, I'm going to attempt to keep this post short...well, as far as my babbling goes. Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing my largest family to date: 10, count 'em 10 people! 8 adults, one newborn, and one two-year old (which, as parents know, is equivalent to two adults since they somehow have the power to be in at least two places at once! lol). You should recognize a couple of familiar faces as I photographed Erin and Jesse when they welcomed their newest, Gabriel, into the world a month ago. Well, Erin's family decided that they wanted to take this opportunity to get portraits for the whole family - covering four generations! I am so honored that they picked me to do this for them. Had a great time meeting all of you!

I know what you’re thinking – Christmas songs? In August? Well…there’s a rhyme to my reason my friends. It looks like it’s about that time again. You know – where I start getting on you to remind you that the holiday season is just around the corner and that it’s time for you to start ~~thinking about~~ booking your family’s holiday session! I know, you think I’m kidding, but lest we forget I warned you all last year that the season would be here before you knew it and I was right. Not that I’m one to say I told you so, buuuuut…. ;)

So that said people, whether you want to surprise mom and dad with some photos of the grandkids (or you and your siblings), you want to include some family photos with this year’s holiday cards, or you just feel like getting your picture taken because you’re feeling fabulous, it’s time to get to it! If you’re hoping to get some photos done for the holidays, now is the time to book. There are still a couple of spots in September and October available, but I literally have one…ONE slot left for the month of November!

Gabriel makes four...

You may remember this gorgeous little family from when we highlighted the anticipation of little Gabriel's arrival (click here). Erin, Jesse, and big sister Norah welcomed little Gabriel into the world on July 16, and today I had the absolute joy of meeting him and photographing him and the rest of the family. Gabriel is easily one of the most calm, sweet little babies I've ever met. Slept most of the session, but even when he was awake, he just sat there calmly and took everything in with his gorgeously deep blue eyes. Who knows, maybe it's a sign of the kind of personality he will have or it could have been the three or four mini-nursing sessions he had, but either way that's my kind of guy - easy going and loves to eat! ;)

Before I get to the photos let me just say that it was hard for me to narrow down my faves, so this is going to be a BIG sneak peek. I'd also advise you to take a seat if you're not sitting already. Prepare for cuteness overload...

Christian's parents-to-be...

Yesterday evening was yet another gorgeous evening in San Diego. The weather was perfect for a fabulous parents-to-be session for Sophia and Steve, who are expecting Christian Oliver (name love!) this September. The parents-to-be wanted to capture this special time in their lives - you know, when they're still able to get some peace and quiet ;) No seriously, maternity sessions are fast becoming my favorites to photograph because it is all about hope and transition; it is a time to celebrate the love that created this life and the love that will grow because of it. There is a look that can only be found on the faces of expectant parents and Sophia and Steve were no exception. It is a look that I can only describe as peaceful excitement. Normally that would be oxymoronic, but in terms of people awaiting the arrival of their child - it makes perfect sense. So anyway, let's ditch my jibber jabbering and get on with the sneak peeks!

Two moms, Two sets of sisters, and three cousins...

Riddle of the day. When do two moms, two sisters, and three cousins equal a total of five people? When the set of sisters happen to be moms, and one of them has two daughters.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of photographing five...count 'em five lovely ladies! Theresa and Karen are sisters and wanted to get some portraits to celebrate the bonds they share as both sisters and mothers. Theresa is mom to one-year old miss Sayla. Her sister, Karen, is mom to two little girls - Hannah, five, and Makayla, also one. All together, these ladies were a ball of energy and just a beautiful family who very clearly love each other to pieces. They picked the gorgeous setting of Coronado beach as their backdrop and it was the perfect day for a beach session, let me tell you. The sun was shining beautifully and the ladies were working it for the camera.

America's Next Top Model? I say yes because Hannah is a doll!

Sayla had a blast during her very first beach visit. What was supposed to be a dip turned into a full soaking when she took a little spill. But she brushed it off and went right back in. Look at this sweet, adorable face!

Little Makayla was none too happy about being at the beach and liked to hide her face. But when she did open up, look at the gorgeous peepers she boasted!

You gotta love a mom who is willing to just jump right in there and get soaked for the shot!

Sorry I've been neglecting the blog a bit readers. Just been spending time being a mommy to my loverly little girl, working, taking pictures, and I took some much needed time off for 100% R&R over the 4th of July weekend.

Caution: shameless plug ahead. Have a facebook account? Fan of Sweetface Photography? Now you can have the best of both world's by becoming a fan on Facebook! I know...this is what's been keeping you up at nights. lol Seriously though...fan me. You know wanna ;)

So the main reason for this entry is to discuss session bookings. I'm happy to report that we're already looking at October and November sessions. But much to my surprise and delight...we're also started booking into 2010! You read that right people. This is a pretty regular occurrence for wedding photographers, as they are often booking up to a year in advance. But with portrait photographers, I'd say the average booking is about a month or two out. So it really speaks to my heart that people are appreciating my work so much that they are booking 3-6 months in advance. Seriously...the love is appreciated right back. Thank you.

On another note, I hope you all are enjoying your summer as much me and my family are. Do any of you have any special plans this summer? Yeah? Comment below - I can always use ideas to keep the husband and the little one entertained.

More shoots coming up soon, starting this weekend with some lovely sisters and their little ones, so keep an eye out for that. And as usual, if you're reading this and are in need of some portraits for you and your family, just shoot me an email.

The little girl in my heart is crying...

I suppose the day had to come some day, but I didn't think it would be this soon. At just 50 years old, Michael Jackson, THE KING OF POP, has passed away. This is hitting me harder than I am prepared for. Celebrities are just people, like you and me, and I am not usually shocked or emotionally unsettled; saddened, of course, because the loss of a life is still a loss. But this...this celebrity death is permeating the skin and bones and making it's way to my core. Yes, his last decade or so in life was riddled with oddities and scandal, but the little girl in my heart can't help but remember studying his dance moves and practicing them with my big brother; the little girl in my heart remembers playing his tapes and rewinding them, playing and rewinding, so I could learn every word of his songs; the little girl in my heart remembers watching his videos and The Wiz and thinking she was going to marry that man. His songs, particulary those of the 80s and early 90s, are a part of the soundtrack of my life and are attached to memories that are evoked every time I hear his music. So today...the little girl in my heart is crying over the loss of Michael Jackson. I am praying for his family - particularly for his three children, and hoping he finally gets some peace.

As a lifestyle photographer, I have gotten used to the idea that when it comes to shooting kids, they pretty much run the show. Because, you know, I want to capture the kids doing what they do best...being themselves. Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Heather, Chuck, and their pretty-as-all-get-out twin girls, Sofia and Maya. At just over 14 months old, they are pretty much mastering the whole walking thing. Couple that with their natural instinct to explore, explore, explore and it easily turned this session into a laugh factory. I'm not sure I've ever laughed so much at a photo session. I had such a great time photographing (yet another) beautiful family, on a beautiful day, in beautiful place. Gosh my job is SO hard ;) Ok...enough of me, right?!

Beautiful day with a beautiful family...

As you might have noticed, the blog has been revamped! Got a nice, nifty new flash header; posts are centered and streamlined, with all the links at the top and bottom of the page; and the most important change - BIGGER PICTURES! Thank God, because the family I'm about to tell you about is too beautiful to be squinting to try to see. ;) Speaking of...let's get into their sneak peeks!

Most of this week, this morning included, the term "June Gloom" seemed to be in full effect. It seemed that, at any given moment, the clouds were on the verge of opening up and letting the rain invade our space. But by some happy miracle, shortly before I met up with today's clients, the clouds had a change of heart and ushered in miles upon miles of golden sunshine. It's like they knew I was going to meet another amazing family today! Chelsea and Michael are parents to two of THE most adorable little kids I've ever laid eyes on. Seriously - just shy of 3 is miss Ella, and I'm telling you she has a face that belongs on TV - she could sell me anything. Handsome little Quintin has the biggest smile, a sweet demeanor, and dimples that you could camp in (I can only imagine the trouble they will get him into someday!). It's really not that hard to believe though, given how good looking mom and dad are. I know I say it a lot, but it's true - I get to shoot the most beautiful families! Ok...so enough of my late-night ramblings, let's get to the pictures!

Release Me...

Song of the day: Release Me by Agnes

I haven’t actually heard this song played on any US radio stations, but it gets plenty airplay on both of my fave UK stations (Kiss 100 FM and Galaxy FM), but Release Me is one of my current loves. Her voice is just so beautiful; it’s like your ears have won the lottery. I also find the title fitting as I prepare to release the new version of the blog. I promise it will be up and running soon, and hopefully you’ll all love it as much as I do.

What else am I working on? Well…photo sessions, of course. I have been happily busy over the last couple of weeks, with some back to back sessions. Good news is more pictures and more happy clients; the bad news is, I’m a little behind in editing. But I have one last client to finish up and we’ll be back on track. Though I will admit that I could probably use some better organizational skills…any ideas or tips from the readers that help you to stay organized? Please comment below.

I have two more sessions coming up this weekend (yay!), then taking a break and spending father’s day weekend in Las Vegas! I’m so excited to spend the weekend away with my hubby and some good friends in one of my favorite places on Earth. Can’t wait to turn my camera loose in the neon-lit dessert, and am planning on blogging about the ~~debauchery~~ trip when I get back.

Back to photography – I have room for one more session this month and I’m happy to say I’ve already even started booking into August. Twinlove! Meet Aven and Easton...

This morning was a very special morning for me. Today I got to {finally} meet and photograph Aven and Easton - the beautiful twin babies of Allison and Marc. Aven and Easton were due June 9, but decided to prove that they were running the show and made their debut on April 28. Mathematicians know that that means these little tikes were preemies, which could have meant a whole bunch of trouble for their health and doctors anticipated a long hospital stay. But once again, they had to remind us who was in charge! These two have such fighting spirits - they were released from the hospital waaay ahead of schedule and are both so healthy and strong. They certainly have the lungs and the appetites to prove it ;)

Soooo...I know you all could care less about what I have to SAY. It's all about the photos right?! So let's just get to it...

Sunday Morning...

Song of the day: Sunday Morning by No Doubt

Saw No Doubt in concert last Friday and just as I expected, it was amazing! I just love this band – I love their music, their vibe, their energy, and their friendship. Gwen is still one tough chick and she rocks out; not to mention, she looks flippin amazing. Just another reminder that I need to really step up my physical renovation. I need to reorganize my workout playlist on my iPod, add some more cardio to my routine, and just do it. I know I can…and I will. Keep ya posted on the outcome.

Friday Randoms…

I chew gum in phases. I’ll go months without chewing a single piece, and then once I do, I’m chewing two or three pieces daily, for a good week. After that, it’s usually eons before I touch another piece. Why is that?

I have come to the conclusion that HD is a hoax. Either that, or the difference between HD and…what, LD (low def)? That the difference only registers if you are of the male variety of our species. We recently purchased a new 47” HD TV, at the husband’s insistence that HD was the bees knees; that once I saw the diff, my eyes would kneel and praise the Vision Gods. So he gets it up, on, and…well the convo goes something like this:

Me: It looks like normal babe

Husband: Really? You really think so? You can’t see the difference?

Me: Huh-uh.

Husband: Rea…no. Maybe…well, you’ll see it when I put on a blu-ray.

He grabs on the first blu-ray dvd he sees and plays it (Pirates of the Caribbean btw)

Husband: Ok now you HAVE to see the change in quality.

Me: Huh-uh.

Husband: {frustrated sigh} Really?!

I’ve been slacking on my 30 by 31 list. So I’ve decided to start a couple new sections (ex “song of the day” and Friday Randoms). There will be more post-blog-op! this will address the “blog more” item on my list. Already been working on more time with the fam. What else should I start on?

I’ve been craving some Thai food for the last couple o’ weeks. Anyone know of any really good places in or near Chula Vista? Comment me below or shoot me an email.

In other news – the blog is being revamped and something splendid this way comes. I am so excited to give this blog a facelift. Shoot – it’s getting a facelift, lipo and a tummy tuck as far as I’m concerned. Can’t reveal anymore details…but you will like. I promise.

Today I had the chance to meet and photograph yet another awesome family. Karina and Doug have an amazingly adorable two-year old named Sienna, and are expecting a new little girl...in about a week! She was on the fence about getting maternity shots done, but I'm so glad she jumped right on in because she has such a beautiful (in every sense of the word) family. Vanessa and I go way, way back. Good ol' CP alum - we went to the same high school, graduating only a year apart. I bet if I told her then that she would marry the man of her dreams just two years after I graduated, she would have laughed that big, happy, infectious laugh of hers and told me I was silly. But that very thing happened. 10 years ago Vanessa and Jair married in Heritage Park, and to celebrate such a wonderful event, we went back to the exact spot where they exchanged "I do"s. Can you get any more romantic than that? Well...Jair can, but more about that later. If I could sum this couple up in three words? Fun, affectionate, and loving. It is very clear in the way they interact, both verbally and physically, that they are still in love all these years later.

Introducing our 2009 Sweet Face Contest Winner!

Some of you may remember this contest I announced a couple of months ago, in order to celebrate the launch of our website. Well, yesterday I got to shoot the winner of that contest, two (almost three) year old Hayden. He and his momma made the drive all the way from Long Beach for our session; unfortunately, getting a little lost along the way, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise. See, when I showed up to our meet spot, the May grays were in full force. But by the time they got there, the sun had just started shining through the clouds. I like to think it was waiting for Hayden, to make sure we could get great shots of this adorable little guy!

Yesterday afternoon, the weather was beautiful - sun shining, temperature nice and warm. Yesterday evening, the skies decided to stick their tongue out at me, crank the cold wind up and hid the sun behind a mass of clouds. Still, I met up with yet another gorgeous family and we decided to ride it out and see what we could make of the session. Erin and Jesse are parents to Norah and have a little boy on the way, who they've taken to calling Peter Rabbit. :) Can I just say I am SO glad that we decided to go for it?! Immediately after each session, I always do an initial run through and make a list of the photos I know I want to use. Going through their images I was stoked - by the time I finished the initial list, I had more than double the amount I normally have. TONS of great images to use...but then it helps a lot when you have a family as beautiful as this one.

Happy Mother's Day!

Well today is Mother's Day - a day we set aside just to celebrate and honor our mothers. If you've been reading the blog this past week, you know I've sort of been honoring a little every day over the last week or so. I know it's been said that the day has become too commercialized and that may be true for some. But I've always felt that no matter what the big greeting card companies and florists may be thinking on their end ($$$), what really only matters is what you're doing on your end. This and every holiday is about what YOU make it, and for me, today is specifically about my mommabear.

Today we'll be going to mom's church and then going to out for a family dinner. Maybe even going out to catch the new Star Trek movie. Hopefully all of you get the chance to spend time with or at least talk to and tell your mom's how much you love and appreciate them today.

I find myself wondering...
Did I remember to thank you
for all that you have done for me?
For all of the times you were by my side
to help me celebrate my successes
and accept my defeats?

One day 'til Mother's Day...

...but I did it again; got too busy to update yesterday so I'll be listing both yesterday's and today's versions of "why I love my mom". So without further ado...

Two reasons I love my mom...

*I love how smart my mom is. She always seem to know the answer. Even if she doesn't, she works and does the research to find out what the answer is.

*I love my mom because of her faith. Her faith in God; her faith in her family; her faith in people in general. Most importantly, her faith in herself.

One last reason why I love my mom...

* I love my mom because she loves me. I know, you're probably thinking well, she's your mom she HAS to love you. But the fact of the matter is - no, she doesn't HAVE to love me. There are women out there who are, in fact, disconnected from their children; who leave their kids behind, or stick around because they think they have to but resent and take it out on those kids, or even worse. That's not my mom - my mom loves me, my brothers, my husband, and my daughter. She is and always has been very present in our lives - affectionate, caring, and supportive. She has been there through it all - making the bad good, and the good better. And I am immeasurably grateful for her.

...but I wasn't able to log in and update yesterday, so I'll be posting both the 4-days and 3-days segments this evening. But ha - you're still only gettin' one teaser photo! Yeah - I'm mean like that. lol

Four things I love about my mom...

*I love how loving, forgiving, and open-hearted my mom is. Mistake after mistake, my mom will ALWAYS let you wipe the slate clean. She always sees the silver lining, and when you only remember all the bad things about a person or thing, she can always seem to remember at least one good thing about them/it. She has really taught me to stay objective in most situations.
*I love when my mom cooks! She, of course, hates cooking altogether, but when she does it, it’s always good. Have you had her spaghetti? No – you need to. But I’m not inviting you because that means less for me. ;)
*I love that my mom is patient with most anything and anyone – except when it comes to her dining experience. She has been known to make us get up and walk out of a restaurant if the service is s-l-o-w as all get out. Some waiters have tried to convince her to stay as they notice her walking out, but to no avail. Once she’s up – dude, she’s out. I crack up about it every time. Not that this is a regular occurrence or anything.
*I love that my mom believes in me and fully supports my wanting to pursue photography. When I told her my ultimate goal of creating this business for myself and eventually doing it full-time, she simply told me, “And you will.”

Three more things I love about my mom...

*I love that she gets so excited when she buys us something. I remember when we kids were mere elementary schoolers and we still did the big “school clothes shopping” extravaganza. You remember it! Anyway, we would always come home and do fashion shows. She would “make” us go try on every single thing we bought and show it to her. “make” = we pretended we didn’t want to do it, but oh we so did. ;) sorry for the grief mom!
*Speaking of excitement – I love how excited my mom can get over some of the most random things. It doesn’t take much to entertain her (eh-hem…she loves most anything on the sci-fi channel. lol). Take her love of Fridays, for instance. I mean, we all love Fridays, but I’m convinced none love it as much as she does. The woman squeals in delight, sings, claps, and dances every.single.Friday. Well, every working Friday.
*I love my mom’s honesty. She will support when I’m right and let me know when I’m wrong. She can check me and uplift me at the same time. I really dig that about her.

Five days 'til Mother's Day...

...and five things I love about my mom.

I love my mom's sense of self-confidence. I am blessed that she has always seemed to carry herself in a way that gave absolutely no regard to what anyone thought of her. Like she says, "they don't pay my bills".

I love my mom's sense of humor.

I love how animated and alive my mom is. I don't think she knows it, but she lights up a room.

I love that my mom is the kind of grandma who will sit and read a book with my daughter one minute, and be up jumping and dancing around with her in the next.

I love that my mom will bail out on working out with me; playing hooky with me, shopping at Target or eating at Costco. :)

Six days 'til Mother's Day...

Six things I love about my mom...

I love that my mom is truly a love-with-your-whole-heart kind of person.

I love her devotion to our God.

I love that she always seems to know the right thing to say and when to say it.

I love that she loves Coca-Cola just as much as I do.

I absolutely love her big smile and even bigger laugh. I especially love when she's laughing so hard that she's crying, and the fact that it doesn't take much to get her laughing.

I love that she is the kind of person who will save you the last piece of cake, even if she had been thinking about it all day.

Over the days leading up to this year's Mother's Day, I will be writing a little bit about the woman who I am blessed to be able to call 'Mommabear'. It will be a little difficult - not because I'll be hard-pressed to find the words, but because it will be hard to do without tears. Already, I'm losing that battle.

And because a post seems so 'blah' without a photo, here's a sneak peek of part of the gift not just for my mom, but for all the other special 'moms' in my life...

Special Delivery

I just wanted to post a doubly huge CONGRATULATIONS to Allison and Marc on the birth of their twins!

Baby boy, Easton, and baby girl, Aven, made their big, unexpected (she wasn't due until June 9) debut early yesterday morning. I've already seen a couple photos of them and as I, ahem, predicted, those tikes are G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!!! So looking forward to meeting them soon. :)

And because a post just isn't a post without photos...here's a couple more shots from their fabulous session.

The things you dream about...

Sigh. I'm sure most people dream about things like exotic vacations, expensive cars and houses, winning the lotto, etc. I, on the other hand, I dream about camera equipment. Yes...camera equipment. While you were resting your pretty little head on your pillow and picturing yourself frolicking along white sands and crystal blue waters, I was dreaming about lenses. I'm talking full on picturing getting online, going to the website of choice and filling out the order form! lol I chose to take it as a sign, so in a couple of days, I will be adding these bad boys to my arsenal:

The 50mm f/1.4.

I currently have a 50 f/1.8 whom I've named "Nifty", but I'm trading him in for this guy. He will be called Nifty Deux. I know - how creative and original of me.

I'm also expecting this dude - the 100mm f/2.8.

He will be replacing both of my kit lenses (who have not seen the light of day since the month I first bought Atreyu [uhh...that's my camera's name]). Not that there's anything wrong with them; but what's the point in keeping them if I'm not using them? Now is not the time for wasting money, you know? Anyhow...here is what Aries will look like.

On a totally different topic - can you believe we're already heading into May?! Where is the time going? It seems like the older you get, the faster time goes. Thankfully, the older Sweetface Photography gets, the busier it gets. May is already shaping up to be a busy month here, as weekend session slots are filling up fast. Booking into June and July has already started, so if you've been wanting to get your family's photos updated, get some headshots for you or your child, or just get some fun anytime shots...get a move on! :) There is no time like the present!

PS - speaking of May. Umm hello...Wolverine this weekend; Star Trek next weekend! I am SO looking forward to summer movie season. What are you looking forward to seeing? Comment below!

Why not a mini for mom and dad?

Both Mother's day (May 10) and Father's day (June 21) are fast approaching. If you're still at a loss for what to give the 'rents, consider giving them the gift of portraits! Limited-availability mini-sessions will be offered on Saturday, May 2, starting at 4:00pm at one of our beautiful beaches.

Aside from making a great gift for mom and dad, a mini-session is the thing for you if you've had or recently had a session with Sweetface Photography but would like new images for the season or to mark a milestone, but not wanting to schedule a full session. Or maybe you've been meaning to try a Sweetface Photography but just haven't gotten around to it. Or maybe you're a friend of a client who's photos you've seen and want a taste of what I have to offer! Or maybe you just want a few gorgeous images of your kiddos. Whatever the case, our mini-sessions wont compare to the full session experience, but they are PERFECT for a little sample of what I have to offer.

Each mini-session costs just $75 and includes:

Approximately 30 minute session (please inquire about pricing for groups larger than four)
10-15 images in a private online gallery
Complementary 8x10 print and 10% off your order

Worth the bugs...

I had an amazing shoot with one fantastic couple today. Allison and Marc are expecting twins in about six weeks (though you could never tell just by looking at her cute, perfect little baby bump) and wanted to document this special time in all their lives. Along for the shoot were many, many, many little bugs...but we still got many, many, many fantastic shots!

Anyway, these two (or should I say four?) were the perfect subjects; both so sweet, funny, and came ready to try anything. It's also very clear that these babies are going to be gorgeous - just look at their parents! va-va-voom :)

Allison and Marc, thanks for letting me capture this time for you guys. I had such a great time photographing you and I cannot wait to meet your little boy and girl! Hope you enjoy your teaser shots...emphasis on teaser ;)

It's that time...

Sorry I'm late getting to this, but you can blame Cox Cable for this one. As many know, we moved this past weekend. Our internet/phone/cable was supposed to be set up on Saturday, but apparently they didn't turn it on. Sunday we called it quits a little early because we were all beat; it was then we realized our services hadn't been activated. So hubby called them and after making him run up and down the stairs to test all the jacks in every room, they still couldn't fix it. They couldn't get a tech out to us until yesterday, frustrating me even further. Oh well - I'm just glad they were finally able to get us up and running.

So all that said, let's just put it in the past and look to future. There are more important things to think about - like who is going to win our Sweet Faces contest. We got lots of adorable entrants - so cute they all are, I'm just glad that I'm not the one who has to decide who the winner is. Voting starts now and since we were delayed in getting this up, the final voting day is now moved to Sunday, April 5.

...it's going to be a very busy next couple of weeks as we are going to be moving this weekend. But I wanted to get on here and post a quick teaser from the session I had yesterday, with my brother and his family.

I seriously think I have the cutest niece ever! :)

To celebrate the launch of the website, Sweetface Photography is having a Sweet Faces Contest!!!

If you have a child between the ages of six months and 10 years, and have not had a session with Sweetface Photography within the last 12 months, submit a recent photo (preferrably a close-up taken within the last eight weeks) to this email. Be sure to put SWEET FACES in the subject line. Please include your child’s name, date of birth, and contact info. In an effort to preserve privacy, contestants’ names will not be published.

Deadline for submission is March 27, 2009 at midnight PST.
Images will be posted on the blog and voting by the public will begin on March 30th and run until April 3, 2009. This contest is limited to 5 entrants, so enter quickly!

What does the winner receive?
The winner receives a complimentary photo session at the location of my choice, and one framed 11×14 image of your choice from the session.

Ack...my kids don't qualify!
So you’ve had a session within the last 12 months, or your kids fall outside the required age range? That’s okay! We still need you! Just forward this information to all of your family and friends and if one of your referrals win, you will receive a $50 print credit to use at a future portrait session!

Details...
∴ Entrants must be between six months and ten years of age at the time of entry.
∴ A signed model release is required.
∴ Child(ren) entered must not have been photographed by us within the past year. If you have had a session with us on or before March 2008, you may enter.
∴ One entry per child. If you have more than one child you may enter them individually; however, session will be limited to the winning child only. Session is non-transferable. Exception: Multiples (ie twins, triplets, etc.) may be entered together.
∴ Standard session policies apply.
∴ Photos entered for contest submission must NOT be from a professional photographer (including Sweetface Photography)
∴ Out-of-state entries will be accepted; however, the winning entrant must be willing to travel to San Diego, California to complete the session.
∴ We reserve the right to disqualify or deny entry to anyone.
∴ Please, no 3rd party entries. If you think of a child who you think could win this contest, please forward this information to their parent/legal guardian so that they can enter their own child.

The winner must book their session within four weeks of notification of winning. The session must be completed before September 6, 2009.
